Artisans draw on their experience for revenge

NORTH Shields RFC Artisans hosted West End last Saturday looking to avenge their 57-0 defeat earlier in the season, while also giving the side a chance to see how they have improved this year.

With the first team taking several players just before kick-off, the Artisans had to reshuffle the team, which was helped with the late arrival of Tony Hansen and Gary Crombie.

The Artisans played into the strong wind first half and with the forwards driving well then linking with the backs, Dale Jones went over for a try which Crombie converted.

The home side then gave away a number of penalties, giving West End the chance to clear their line deep into North Shields half.

One such kick and chase led to a West End try, leaving the half-time score 7-7.

In the second half, and with the wind at their backs, Artisans’ forwards dominated the tight and loose play, allowing the backs to show their speed and handling skills.

Crombie was the first to put his name on the scoresheet with one of his snipping runs then converting his own try.

Next on the score sheet was Carl Cramman, converted from the touchline by Crombie.

Steve Young, with his speed and powerful running, went over for the fourth try with Crombie once more converting.

Another good run by Young added another try before Paul Walsh had a 60-yard dash and dummied on the five-metre line to dive over in the corner.

North Shields relaxed at the death, allowing West End to score with the last play of the game.

The score could have been more if Young had not kicked the ball dead, saving a certain try.
