Bronze medal for Norman in his first ever indoor run at Don Valley Stadium

A RUNNER has made great strides after picking up a bronze medal in his first ever indoor event.

Norman du Bruin, of North Shields Polytechnic Club, took bronze at the inaugural Masters Indoor Event at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield.

The 48-year-old Poly athlete has only been training for two years and had never before competed on a 200m indoor track, which meant doing four laps for first time in his career.

Yet, he marked his 800m debut with a remarkable race which saw the first three runners cross the line with less than three-tenths of a second seperating them.

Although he finished third in the race he was second in his age category.

Speaking about his experience Norman said: “I got boxed in on the home straight, learned a lesson there.”

Winner of the senior 800m race was Edward Huxford, from Cleethorpes (M35) in a time of 2.13.54, in second place, and fellow over 45-year-old, was John Nibb, of Derby AC in a time of 2.13.67, with Norman finishing with a personal best time of 2.13.77.

Norman travelled to the event with fellow Poly athlete Richard Baker, who competed in the senior men’s 400m. He finished fourth in his heat in a time of 62.25.
