Disatrous start for Backworth batsmen

FOLLOWING overnight rain Backworth invited Burnopfield to bat first despite a damp outfield.

Once Adam Black achieved the initial breakthrough, Ian Stubbs and Joy Saini followed up with two wickets each.

The rest of the innings was built around a knock from Marcus Peart who scored freely against the change bowlers. He was eventually caught out for 85 when Adam Black returned to the attack.

Black picked up a further three wickets to finish with 4–35 off 13 overs.

Backworth's reply started disastrously with the first four batsmen out all failing to score.

Paul Walker led a recovery, initially with minor support from Nick Rudd and Daniel Woods, before a fruitful partnership with Ian Stubbs threatened to turn the game round.

However, both were bowled by Allan, Stubbs for 23 and Walker four runs short of what would have been a well deserved century.

Despite the conditions the second team were also able to complete their match at Morpeth.

Backworth were all out for 122 with Steven Clarke scoring 52. Morpeth got the runs for the loss of three wickets, two of which were taken by James Thompson.
