England honours for John in loss to Australia

A YOUNG student was on international duty last week but could not prevent England sliding to defeat.

John Grey, who is on the TyneMet football development programme, was one of 16 players selected for England Colleges to play against Australia Colleges at Solihull Motors’ ground in Birmingham.

Although the left back had a good game he was unable to prevent Australia from winning 2-0.

England manager Gordon Staniforth heaped praise on John, saying: “I was delighted with John’s performance.

“He is a competent all round footballer who caused a lot of trouble in the attacking third.”

England Colleges Football is the official national team for further education college-based players, run in partnership by British Colleges Sport and The Football Association.

Grey will be joined by team-mate Dan Young attending an England training camp in Basingstoke during the week.

The players will be put through their paces by the national team staff and will hopefully impress enough to be selected for the squad for the Anglo-Welsh Shield against Wales in March.

Neil Baistow, head football development coach at TyneMet, said: “I am delighted for John.

“To be able to represent your country at any level is a remarkable achievement.

“He performed very well and should be proud of his achievements to date.

“And I am optimistic that John and Dan will be selected for the forthcoming Wales game.”
