FA honours football team for their success in competition

WHITLEY Bay FC were formally recognised for their FA Carlsberg Vase achievements at the weekend when they were presented with three awards.

Chairman of the FA Vase committee John Ward was at Hillheads to present an illuminated scroll to the Seahorses following their historic treble win in the Vase, having lifted the trophy in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

A miniature replica of the trophy was presented to mark last season’s success when they beat Coalville 3-2 in the final at Wembley, while secretary Derek Breakwell was handed a commemorative shield.

Whitley Bay continued their run of form in the competition with a 5-0 win over Saturday’s opponents South Park, booking a place in the last 16 against fellow Northern League outfit West Auckland FC.

Saturday was their 24th consecutive round in the competition.

The club return to league action this weekend when they welcome Penrith to Hillheads, kick-off is at 3pm.

Whitley Bay are currently top of the STL Northern League division one, ahead of Sunderland RCA on goal difference and a point ahead of West Auckland, who they meet in a league fixture seven days before the Vase tie.

Penrith are in the bottom half of the table, and following their draw against Shildon at the weekend will be looking forward to playing again following the postponement of their midweek match against South Shields.
