A YOUNG martial arts devotee from a Tyneside Tae Kwon-do club proved his prowess alongside senior colleagues when they scooped gold medals at the Scottish Championships.

The annual contest attracts competitors from all over Great Britain and is organised by the Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain.

Seven-year-old Kieran Bithell, from North Shields, won gold in the junior tag team category.

Kieran joined the “TKD Tigers” club 12 months ago and in that time has achieved a yellow belt. He is looking forward to his next grading in December for green stripe belt.

Martin Blight, 21, a blue belt, won gold in the men’s heavyweight category and bronze for the men’s tag team event.

Martin said: “There were some very good competitors on the day, and I’m very proud to have been able to bring back two medals. I’m looking forward to the British Championships in November.”

Club instructor Lydia Walker, 24, who has 14 years experience, said: “I am really proud of all of my students who competed in Scotland.

“For some like Kieran, this was their first competition and they represented their club to a very high standard.

“He made our senior competitors really proud, and we look forward to greater success in future competitions.

“It’s really important that any club like ours is a supportive environment where you can learn new abilities and skills, no matter what age you are.”

The club is always welcoming new members to take up the Korean martial art.

Classes are available for all ages in West Denton, Jesmond, Whitley Bay and North Shields.
