Oliver in a spin on Dubai cricket tour

Tynemouths young spin bowler Oliver McGee returned to the UK last week following his part in the Durham Young Academy Nissan Gulf Cup triumph in Dubai.

A YOUNG cricket star had his opponents in a spin after helping a county side win a tournament in Dubai.

Tynemouth Cricket Club’s young spin bowler Oliver McGee was part of the Durham Young Academy Nissan Gulf Cup triumph.

The Durham side, all under 15, carried off the title despite it being an under 17 competition.

And 14-year-old Oliver, a pupil at Marden High School, played an important role and was among the wickets – as he was last season for Tynemouth.

The ten day competition, supplemented by additional friendlies, was played in the desert conditions that took their toll on the full England team who were in the region at the time.

The side played seven fixtures with Oliver’s contribution 6-96 over the games he played showing his undoubted potential.

After returning home last week, he said: “Academy Coaches John Windows and Ali Maiden were great.

“They challenged us all to improve ourselves and keep setting goals to improve.

“I was given the responsibility to set my own fields and think far more about the game and I know the areas I have to work hard on over the next few years if I want to progress.”

Oliver was more animated about the experience of the trip itself, swapping the ravages of the north east winter for the desert conditions in Dubai.

“It was amazing, the most phenomenal experience ever, a different world,” he said.

“The hospitality was really good and we stayed in a seven star hotel.”

Oliver was also quick to thank Tynemouth CC, North Tyneside Council and Northumberland Youth Cricket Trust for their financial assistance in supporting him to make the trip.

With the season now only two months away Ollie now restarts his practice with the Tynemouth senior squad having broken into the Premier League first team side last season.
