Rugby league teams will line up in support of charity
THE inaugural North East State of Origin is due to take place next month with players from two borough rugby league teams due to take part.
Tyne and Wear will take on County Durham on Sunday, March 18, in the event at Helford Road, Peterlee.
The State of Origin game is specifically to raise awareness of mental health issues and raise money for the registered charity Mind.
The game will see open age teams from the north east join together to take on their county rivals; the squads will be made up from a range of teams including Wallsend Eagles and Whitley Bay Barbarians.
Dean Barnes, event organiser, said: “When I came up with the concept of the event the whole idea was to raise awareness of mental health issues.
“As a rugby league fan it seems sensible to combine a great sport with a charity.
“In addition to the north east players involved in a playing capacity we are also hoping plenty of supporters get behind the teams on the day and raise a substantial amount of money for a great cause.”
