Tynemouth beat odds to take 21 vital points
TYNEMOUTH overcame early morning rain and Newcastle to claim 21 valuable points in a vital league game at Preston Avenue in their Premier League fixture.
With an early lunch taken, the game was reduced to 94 overs and, on winning the toss, skipper Andrew Smith had no hesitation in inserting the visitors on a wicket which he hoped would offer early assistance after rain all day Friday and early Saturday morning.
South African Terence Davis-Taylor certainly enjoyed the early conditions as he caused all sorts of problems for the Newcastle top order.
He had Niall Penfold caught in the gully by Ben Debnam for one in the second over of the game and Carr soon, for three, caught at square leg by Anthony Turner.
Meanwhile the other opener, Nick Tomlinson, was mixing edges through the slips with strong shots through mid wicket to keep the board moving early on.
James Davidson tried to hit his way out of trouble; seizing on anything slightly short – hitting one over for 14 – before he was well caught and bowled by Scott Borthwick for 22.
Tomlinson followed soon, lbw to Borthwick for 20 and when Smith had Lake caught at slip by Borthwick for 13, Newcastle had slipped to 70-5.
However, Newcastle skipper Richie Evans had other ideas and he marshalled the tail excellently.
His main support came from Matthewson who made 19 before he fell lbw to Davis-Taylor.
Burrow (5) hung around in support of his skipper before he was Borthwick's third wicket, while Lindsay fell to Davis-Taylor caught on the boundary by Borthwick for 3.
Evans fell just short of a deserved half century when he was bowled by Smith for 43 in the last of the 51 overs, at which point Newcastle declared on 164-9.
Davis-Taylor ended up with 4-25, Borthwick took 3-48 and Smith 2-33.
Newcastle's opening bowlers Cryer and Lindsay had seen the effectiveness of the short ball and Cryer was keen to try and bounce out Tynemouth's openers Matthew Brown and Smith.
However, both openers held firm and got off to a steady start. They were only parted when Evans had Brown caught at mid on by Tomlinson for 19.
This brought Borthwick to the crease for start of what would turn out to be a brilliant innings. By the 20th over the score had progressed to 43-1 and a rate of nearly six an over was needed to win the game.
Smith departed soon after, bowled by Evans for 22. Borthwick attacked the Newcastle bowlers, all of whom suffered at his hands.
Initially partnered by Debnam, they got the scoreboard moving as they repeatedly ran quick singles, while Borthwick sat on the back foot and waited for anything that was slightly short and hammered it to the boundary.
Debnam was out for 10, caught by Penfold. Borthwick was given the support he needed by new batsmen Tony Turner who made 22 from only 18 balls before being caught behind off Cryer.
By this time Borthwick had already passed his fifty and with only 25 required for victory and still six overs to go.
Borthwick eventually ended unbeaten on 85 and it was fitting that another boundary from his bat brought up the winning runs for a very happy Tynemouth side.
On Saturday Tynemouth travel to third placed Blaydon hoping to protect a three match unbeaten run.
In the Second Teams' fixture, Tynemouth had an interestingly placed match curtailed by the weather against Newcastle Seconds.
Tynemouth batted first and were soon in trouble. Jon Hymers fell lbw for one, Tony Lion was then bowled for seven, Richie Straughan went first ball and then Chad Koen was bowled for a duck.
Tynemouth were in deep trouble at 20-4. A rain interruption then reduced the game to a maximum of 80 overs in the game.
Chris Beever came to the fore, stroking a number of exquisite drives through mid off. He and Dave Hayward took the score to 54 when Hayward reached for a wide delivery and was caught behind for 13.
James Sander joined Beever and the pair gradually took the initiative.
The pair added 80 before Beever's elegant 73 was ended.
At 136–6 there was still work to do and when Perry was stumped for a duck at 143 and then Dunlop bowled for 12 at 165, a challenging total looked unlikely.
Some late hitting and positive running between the wickets by John Callaghan (17 no) and James Sander (55 no) posted an impressive 203-8 off 42 overs.
In response Newcastle openers Allen and Coverdale survived a hostile spell from Chris Dunlop. It was not until the introduction of Russell Perry that Tynemouth made a breakthrough when he bowled Allen for 17.
Coverdale (39 no) and Smith (7 no) played positively taking the score
to 71-1 when rain finally defeated the efforts of the players.
Tynemouth took 10 points from the game to Newcastle's 9 points.
The Saturday Third Team were again victims of the weather and their match against Heaton Park at Prior's Park was called off in the morning of the game.
Tynemouth's Sunday Third Team moved into third place in the Dukes North East Premier League Third division with an exciting12 run victory over Benwell Hill.
After electing to bat first, Tynemouth were struggling on 107–7 when Chris Beever was out for 35. However, some good late order contributions from Sam Robson (18), Conor Lonnberg (21) and Louis Storey (11 not out) enabled Tynemouth to reach a competitive 171–9 from their 45 overs.
In reply, Benwell Hill looked to be cruising to their target when on 118–2.
The introduction of Beever helped to change the game in Tynemouth's favour with Beever recording 3–26.
The re-introduction of Paul Haley into the attack proved crucial as five wickets fell in his 2.5 overs including two run outs. Haley finished with figures of 3–26 off 7.5 overs.
This was an excellent all round team performance from a side with an average age of just 18.
