Walker's appeal

BUILDING for success and catching them young are two targets that are regularly achieved by Walker Central, one of the outstanding football clubs in the east end of Newcastle.

And with the club having just celebrated its 20th season, preparations are already well advanced for the 2009-2010 campaign.

Walker's senior team have consistently played well during the last two seasons, winning the Northern Alliance in successive years.

John Campbell, who progressed through the club's junior teams, was the leading scorer in the Alliance last season when he also signed for Manchester City's Academy team. League clubs in England and Scotland are watching his progress with a keen interest.

Some soccer pundits are forecasting that he could be the next Shola Ameobe, the Newcastle United striker who also passed through the ranks of Walker Central.

Another player who made his name with Newcastle, Lee Clark, was one of the founding members of the Walker club together with Brian Clark, Eddie Hammil and Brian Simpson.

Coaching sessions for the new season ahead have already commenced with all age groups well catered for at the Monkchester Road ground.

There's an opportunity for players of all ages to attend the coaching and training sessions on Saturday mornings.

Youngsters aged between three and eight train between 9.30 and 10.30

And those aged nine and over are coached between 10.30 and 11.30

The younger players are split into age groups and toddlers aged three and four will have their own sessions under a qualified coach.
