Whitley Bay are out of the Vase

WHITLEY Bay FC have crashed out of the FA Carlsberg Vase following a dramatic 90 minutes at Hillheads on Saturday afternoon.

Their three year unbeaten run in the competition came to an end following a 2-1 defeat to Northern League rivals West Auckland, with all three goals being scored in the dying minutes of the game.

Bay were reduced to ten men when LeePaul Scroggins was shown a straight red card for a challenge on West’s Alex Francis. Francis left the pitch in an ambulance following a 30 minute delay, having broken his leg in the challenge.

The first half played out 0-0 and in the second half Whitley coped well with just ten men, creating a number of chances.

West also looked dangerous on the break and both sides came close to creating chances, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on the 89 minute through Mattie Moffat.

The tie wasn’t over though, and within the minute Paul Robinson had equalised to bring Whitley Bay back into the game.

Many expected the match to then go into extra time, but in the third minute of stoppage time Michael Rae scored the winner to send West Auckland through to the quarter finals of the FA Carlsberg Vase, and the famous Whitley Bay Vase run was over.

Footage of the game can be seen here.
