THREE young boxers from the borough were among a group who took part in a tournament thanks to the backing of a company.
Dominic Hatton ad Edwin Emmerson, both from North Shields, and national champion Lawrence Osueke, from Cullercoats, were part of the eight who flew out to the event in Rhodes.
Their trip was funded by Newcastle-based MTrec Recruitment directors Rob Armstrong and David Musgrave following a sponsorship appeal by ex-professional heavyweight boxer Manny Burgo to fund Rye Hill Amateur Boxing Club’s visit to the Greek island.
MTrec Recruitment weighed in with a knockout donation of £2,000 to pay for the youngsters’ flights.
During the week long visit, the young boxers were able to train in the Aegean heat before competing in fights against their Greek counterparts. They were joined by former undefeated Northern Area Welterweight champion Paul King and experienced coaches Terry Clark and Phillip Hatton.
MTrec director Rob Armstrong has followed Manny’s boxing career for many years and the two have become firm friends.
“Both David and I are delighted to be able to help Rye Hill ABC with their travel costs, we enjoy investing in the raw talent of the north east and we are sure that the experience will be good for the youngsters,” he said.
David added: “These lads train hard three nights a week, every week of the year and already some of them are showing signs of becoming a real force in the world of boxing.”
Manny said: “The help we’ve had from MTrec Recruitment has paid for our travel to Rhodes. We are all very grateful for their very kind donation.”
