COLLINGWOOD Tennis Club’s boys’ teams have had varied results this year with the 12s finishing their debut season in the Aegon league a creditable second behind an all county Cramlington team.
The team of Matthew Robson, Sam Allonby, Hugo Meecham, Tom Ridley and Aidan Elliott beat all teams apart from Cramlington to finish runners-up on six points out of a potential eight, and with a 43 per cent win ratio.
Last weekend’s win over Blaydon was a team effort with Allonby and Ridley registering good singles wins over their opposite number twos and three, whilst Elliott and Meecham lost close games at numbers one and four respectively.
But they teamed up well with Allonby and Ridley to comfortably win the doubles in straight sets to pick up an 8-4 victory.
In the under-16s it was a ‘learning curve year’ for Collingwood boys as they failed to register a win with a very young team, most of whom were just out of under-12s.
The team showed good promise, especially 13-year-old number one Olly Drake, who lost a close match to the Yarm number one, giving away a good few years in experience and inches in height.
Harry Cox and Miles Pearson never gave up, despite playing opposition a good few years older than them, and Dan McDermott played some great tennis before losing a close third set tiebreak 10-8.
Coaching at Collingwood is all day Saturday for juniors and Tuesday from 7pm to 8pm for adults. It is also now open to non members.
