Children try out tag rugby

YOUNGSTERS from across the borough and further afield took part in the Year 3 North East Schools Tag Rugby Festival.

Held at Longbenton’s Benton Dene Primary School, the second ever event saw 18 schools from North Tyneside, Newcastle, Hexham, South Shields and Blyth taking part.

A total of 22 teams lined up for the fast moving, non-contact invasion game suitable for boys and girls to play together.

Mini tag is now the Rugby Football Union’s officially recommended version of rugby for under-7s and under-8s.

Representatives from England Ladies World Cup runners-up team, the Rugby Football Union and players from Newcastle Falcons were all in attendance.

The interchangeable nature of possession, leading to rapid switching from attack to defence, means that a range of skills is cultivated and developed.
