Collingwood boys’ team up against older opposition

Have your say

COLLINGWOOD Tennis Club Boys 12s C team competed well against a much older Gosforth team in the Northumberland and Durham League.

The team of Gabe Allonby, Alex Jay, Ben McDermott and Jack Woodward, who all have at least another two years in the age group, were not fazed by their older and taller opposition.

Although no one won a set in the singles, Gabe Allonby went close before eventually losing 3-4, 4-5 (6-8) in nearly two hours.

The boys teamed up well for the doubles with McDermott and Woodward and Allonby and Jay winning three and four games in each doubles match respectively.

In the Aegon League, Collingwood had the tightest possible away win over Cullercoats in the Boys 12s North A division.

For the home team Parkin and Short had straight set singles wins over Robson and Elliott and also took the doubles in straight sets.

Collingwood won the number three and four singles with Hugo Meecham and Sam Allonby overcoming Tom Whiting Adams and Andre Streimann, and also took the doubles to make the match 6-6 and take it to a doubles shoot-out.

Robson and Allonby eventually won for Collingwood 10-6 to win the match 7-6 overall.

Collingwood’s mini tennis green team had a good win over Beverley Park Club on Sunday with Alex Jay leading the way by winning his singles 4-0, 4-0.

Club girls 10s champion Lucy Cox showed great recent improvement to also win her singles in straights sets.

The experienced mini orange players Gabe Allonby and Matthew Smith stepped up to green ball level with some aplomb, also winning singles and doubles rubbers in straight sets to win the match 12-0 overall.
