COLLINGWOOD Tennis Club’s girls’ teams did the double last weekend with wins over Virgin Active Wearside and David Lloyd Teesside in the 12s and 14s Aegon leagues.
Laura Van Ransbeke and Emily Harrison won comfortable singles matches and combined well in their first doubles to record the six points needed for victory over the Wearside club.
Lucy Cox played really well but was edged out of a close first set tie-break before losing 7-6, 6-1.
On Sunday, a strong team of Ailsa Denholm, Esmai Jonczyk-Brown, Amy Hedworth and Molly Robinson were too powerful for David Lloyd Teesside, eventually recording a good 12-0 win.
The girls now top the North East Aegon Girls’ 14s League.
Collingwood boys were not quite as successful with the 12s losing out in a ‘tie-break shoot-out’ to Blaydon.
Sam Allonby and Alex Jay won singles rubbers putting Collingwood 4-0 up before Ben McDermott and Jamie Wills fought back well to win the doubles in three sets to take the score to 6-0.
But Blaydon fought back to make it 6-6, and in the shoot-out Collingwood lost.
Collingwood boys’ 14s team were away to top of the table Sunderland Tennis Centre.
Olly Drake showed consistent form, picking up back to back wins over higher rated players.
Matthew Robson and Harry Cox were unable to get the better of higher rated players in their singles and club ten and under champion Alex Jay did well stepping up to under 14s, eventually losing a close game to maker it 10-2 to Sunderland.
