Collingwood Tennis Club girls 14 and under ‘A’ team won the LTA Northeast League last weekend after a title deciding win against Virgin Active Sunderland.

The tie started well for Collingwood with Laura Van Ransbeke winning the number one singles before Esmai Jonczy-Brown and Hannah Chapman put Collingwood 2-0 up with a good doubles win.

At number two, Ailsa Denholm played good tennis and was unlucky to lose a close singles in the third set.

With Jonczy-Brown losing the number three singles the match was tied before Chapman won in straights sets for Collingwood to edge 3-2 ahead.

With the unbeaten number one doubles pair of Van Ransbeke and Denholm overpowering their opponents in the deciding doubles 4-0, 4-0, Collingwood won the league for the second straight year.

Collingwood mini red team enjoyed their biggest victory of the seaso,n 15-1 over Cullercoats’ fourth team.

Max Thompson, Elizabeth Graham, Ethan Veitch and Adam Jones put in a fine performances to sit second in the league with the final game the league decider against Ponteland next month.

Collingwood orange team of Jacob Eccles, Malcolm Winton, Holly Eccles and Lucy Robinson competed and concentrated well but were on the losing end of the scoreline against a strong Ponteland team who won the league with Collingwood finishing in second place.

Collingwood girls 14s second team were unlucky against Cullercoats last weekend with Libby Hall and Jasmine Hacioglu winning both singles and doubles but Clara Loughlin and Libby Hall unlucky to lose the match shoot-out 10-8.

Collingwood 14s ‘B’ team now face a trip to Virgin Active Sunderland with both teams along with Cullercoats all capable of winning the ‘B’ league on the final weekend.
