LOCAL tennis players James Brown (Cullercoats Club) and Gabe Allonby (Collingwood Club) were last week crowned County Tennis Champions in their respective age groups.
In the boys’ 16 and under event, Brown beat Oliver Jansen in the semi-final before claiming the title with a straight sets win over Robert Docherty.
He also won the 18’s title beating Cullercoats team-mates Jordan Simpson and Joe Whiting along the way to do a memorable double.
Allonby played really well in the boys’ ten and under event reaching the final at his first attempt but lost out to top seed Michael Ray, from Cramlington.
But he won the nine and under event without dropping a set, beating Cole Cartmell in the final.
The county title tops off a good year for the Priory school pupil who also finished top of the county nine and under tournament leader board.
Mini tennis red sessions (for ages four to eight years) will be run jointly between Cullercoats and Collingwood tennis clubs from Churchill indoor tennis centre, Wallsend, from October. The sessions will run every Saturday morning at either 9-10am or 10-11am for those specified ages.
