North Shields Crusaders hosted Houghton Boars in their opening home fixture since promotion to the Northumberland River Coquet League.
Tommy Rendles led the side and formed a centre partnership with his son Jack.
Ryan Wood and Mark Greenwood made their first starts of the season in the back row and the Crusaders were able to field a full back line so forwards Sam Condie, Ben Cockburn and Josh Stewart could all return to their more familiar positions in the pack.
Houghton were quick off the mark and ran in three tries in the opening quarter, two being converted, and they quickly opened up a 19-0 lead.
After that a period of Crusaders pressure resulted in a try for Jack Rendles and made the half time score 19-5 to the visitors.
In the second half the Crusaders dominated but were unable to turn their dominance into enough points to win the game.
A Jack Jeffrey penalty was the only points of the second half and Houghton hung on for a 19-8 win.
Prop Cockburn just pipped hooker Condie to win the man of the match award.
Next week the Crusaders are again in league action and are on the road with a trip to Winlaton Vulcans 2nd XV, kick-off 3pm.
