Crusaders shut out in derby defeat to Rangers

Top of the table side North Shields Crusaders made the short trip to Whitley Bay Rockcliff to play Rangers in a Derwent League clash between two previously unbeaten sides.

Crusaders were short in the front row so Dave Hardy moved to prop with David Shield coming into the second row alongside the returning Dave Kinsey.

In the backs it was first starts of the season for Iain Finlay in the centre and Steve Thompson on the wing.

The first half was a closely fought encounter with Rockcliff scoring the sole points through a try in the corner which was unconverted.

The second half was equally close as Crusaders were unlucky not to be able to convert two opportunities for tries and missed three penalty kicks.

Rockcliff added a penalty before a lack of concentration from Crusaders saw them adding a late final try with the last play of the game for a 13-0 victory.

Next week Crusaders look to bounce back with a home league game as Bishop Auckland III are the visitors to Preston Playing Fields, kick-off 3pm.
