Cullercoats boys open with win

CULLERCOATS boys’ 14s and under tennis team had a good opening day win over Bohemians of Gosforth in the LTA North East Aegon League on Saturday.

Ryan Maughan and Tom Whiting-Adams had good straight set wins and Olly Perkins had a superb 6-1, 6-0 success.

Despite playing well, Peter Black had a tougher time, losing in straight sets.

Whiting- Adams and Maughan combined well to win their doubles 6-0, 6-1, and despite a titanic tussle, Black and Perkins lost in the third set tie-break 12-10 to make the match an 8-4 Cullercoats win.

Cullercoats boys 16s and under, who are defending the Northumberland and Durham league title, also had a good opening day win over a strong Virgin Active Sunderland.

Ryan Maughan stepped up for the first time and did well on his debut despite losing a close match tie-break singles.

Rory Thompson, Dan Simpson and Jacob Docx were all too strong for their opposition, winning in straight sets to take the tie 4-2.

Coaching at Cullercoats is all day Saturday and free as part of junior membership for the next eight weeks.
