BOTH Cullercoats girls’ 12s and boys’ 16s’ B team had close wins in their weekend tennis fixtures.
Phil Rudd and Joe Haines were top performers for the boys’ 16s in the Northumberland and Durham League tie against Blaydon, winning both singles and doubles in straight sets.
With Tom Whiting Adams and Ryan Maughan making their club 16s’ debut, the step up from 12s’ league was too much on this occasion and both lost out in close sets.
The overall result was 3-3 with Cullercoats taking the tie on the count-back by four games.
Cullercoats girls’ 12s’ continue to have a successful start to their first league campaign for four years by winning their first two matches.
Last weekend they played Shotley and Benfieldside.
Steph Black won the number four singles 4-0, 4-0 for Cullercoats, and with Emma Charlton also winning in straights sets Cullercoats went 2-0 ahead.
Rachel Foreman and Lucy Giles, at number one and two respectively, found their opponents too strong but each took valuable sets towards the team score in their singles.
With Foreman and Giles also losing a close doubles it was up to Black and Charlton to keep the tie alive by winning the 3/4 doubles, which they duly did in straight sets.
The match went to a sets count-back with Cullercoats coming out 8-6 victors.
Cullercoats girls’ 12s now stand joint top of the league with two games to play.
