Tynemouth Cricket Club’s new nets facility was officially opened by Durham and England bowler Mark Wood on Friday night.

It was a brief but well attended ceremony led by chairman Graeme Hallam just before the T20 fixture with Willington.

Wood began his playing days with Ashington Juniors under the watchful eye of now Tynemouth coach Steve Williams.

He played all age groups for Northumberland starting at under-13 before joining the Durham Academy and then receiving a full-time first class contract. He played for Tynemouth in 2012.

Installed by Exclusive Leisure, the nets cost £26,000 and the SITA Trust and their helpful staff were gratefully thanked for agreeing to contribute £20,000 towards them.
