FIVE fighting fit Whitley Bay youngsters have been selected to take part in the international Taekwon-Do World Cup.
Just weeks after Olympic hero Jade Jones won Team GB’s first ever gold medal in the martial art, the students from the Reflex Academy are hoping to follow her lead in the prestigious event in Brighton.
Black belts Melina Notidou, 14, and Sophie Noble, 16, will be joined by red belts Max Johnston, 12, Joshua Nandy, 12 and Sarah Elliot, 17, at the international event in October.
The students were selected by the Taekwon-Do Association of England (TAE) and will be representing both the association and the Reflex club, based opposite Playhouse Whitley Bay.
The event takes place every two years and has attracted interest from 1,600 competitors from 160 clubs and associations across 45 countries.
All five youngsters will take part in a series of challenges over the competition including power tests, patterns, special techniques and team events.
Reflex coach Brett Stronach, a 5th degree black belt, international examiner and umpire, said he was proud of the youngsters’ achievements.
“They have been selected from hundreds of TAE students to which Reflex is affiliated. It’s a fantastic achievement,” he said.
To help fund their cup dreams, the youngsters are now looking for sponsorship and donations to cover the £1,500 needed for equipment, entrance fees, travelling and accommodation.
