A North Shields Polytechnic athlete’s trip to the Costa Blanca in Spain recently was definitely not for a beach holiday.
For Heather Gould it was to take part in the Rojales 10K run.
Gould has been training with North Shields Polytechnic Athletic Club for more than ten years, racing many times for the club, including taking part in six marathons, one in Mallorca.
She enjoys running in warmer climates so chose Spain as a location for her latest success.
She said: “Being in the masters over 50 category I knew there would be a good chance of winning a trophy in my age group as running is not something ageing Spanish women do.
“As it was 37 degrees for the previous three weeks before this race, the only preparation I did was 20 minutes of hill running twice a week complimented by swimming and cycling.
“It has been a long time since I last won anything or was acknowledged for running well and I felt proud to wear my Poly vest on the podium.”
When not taking part in athletic events – including triathlons – Gould can often be seen behind a megaphone as the director of the weekly Whitley Bay parkrun.
