NORTH Shields tennis star James Parkin finished runner-up of the 10&U AEGON Winter National Tour at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton at the weekend.
The ten-year-old, who enjoyed a fine run of form en route to the final, was beaten by Oscar Cutting from Ipswich in an entertaining match which finished 3-5, 4-2, 1-0 (9).
Following an impressive run of form throughout the tour over the last few months, Parkin was invited to compete in the prestigious AEGON finals by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
He said: “It went really well – it was close but I just lost.
“I’ve learnt that matches can be really tight when it comes to the final and that it can be close between winning and losing and I have to deal with that.”
Steven Martens, player director of the LTA, said: “To finish runner-up is a fantastic achievement and I’m sure James will build on this experience.”
“The tournament brings together the best boys and girls in the country, who have been playing in this national tour circuit throughout the winter.
“Competition at a young age is vitally important in developing both the tactical and mental competitive qualities the players need to have in place as they progress and start to play internationally.”
The invitation-only tournament is the pinnacle of the winter British tennis season and showcases the talent of some of the best young players in the country.
