A YOUNG North Shields tennis player has won the Boys Under 10s Winter National tour event at Tipton Tennis Academy in Birmingham.

James Parkin followed up his recent second place at the Bolton Arena in December with a convincing win to cement his place at the top of the Under 10 National Tour leaderboard, with one event remaining.

His victory in the final against Boris Ivanyuzhenkhov (Middlesex) came after a closely contested first set, which Parkin won on a tense tie break 5-4, going on to win the second set 4-1.

Parkin had progressed to the final courtesy of victories against Timothy Goodman (Surrey) (5-3, 5-3), Harry Hylton (Essex) (4-1, 4-2) and Alexander Wardley (Cambridgeshire) (5-4, 4-0).

Parkin is part of the Lawn Tennis Association Aegon Future Stars Programme for the third year in succession.

A pupil at Preston Grange Primary School, he trains daily at the Northumberland High Performance Centre in Jesmond under the close supervision of his coach Chris Sanderson.
