A YOUNG judo member has been rewarded for her dedication and commitment.

Wallsend-based Bushido Judo Kwai present the Steve Milsted Award every year to their best junior member.

Steve was a founder member of the club, giving a lot of time and effort into raising funds in the late 1970s before emigrating to Australia some years ago.

This year the competition was a very close run affair, being decided at the Westgate Judo Club Graded Tournament in May, when 11-year-old Jessica Cairns won a silver medal in her event.

Jessica first joined the Bushido Judo Kwai in March 2007 and follows a long line of first class judoka to win this award, starting in 1978 with Jan Russell.

Long time member Michael Clark, a well respected member and a great friend to the Bushido Judo Kwai, was invited to present Jessica with her trophy.

Mick joined in 1976, just months after the club was founded and has the grade of 1st Dan. Mick has also represented the club in Spain and Japan.
