Judo club lands seven medals at international championship

BATTLE Hill Judo Club took part in the IBF (International Budo Federation) International Judo Championships in Dumfries.

The club had eight competitors from Wallsend, Seghill and Cramlington in the event, returning with seven medals.

Ryan Smith took a bronze medal in the junior boys’ u30kg event, and Megan Moody achieved a silver in the junior girls’ u40kg category.

Megan’s two brothers Joe and Owen, along with team-mate Callum McKenzie competed in the primary boys’ u20kg pool.

Six-year-old Callum and five-year-old Owen each returned with a bronze, while seven-year-old Joe gained the gold medal.

Tonicha Brown, 13, had a good pool of green belts in the junior girls’ u48kg event and she gained a silver medal.

Kieran Tweedy, 11, impressively won all three of his contests by Ippon (maximum score) to secure gold in the junior boys’ u40kg category.

John Stone was competing with more than 50 seniors at the event and was runner-up in the senior men’s u90kg category.

Battle Hill Judo Club is coached by Malcolm Young 4th Dan and Damien Anderson 1st Dan.

New students are always welcome at Churchill Community College on a Wednesday evening.
