THE only Tynemouth side in action towards the end of last week were the Thursday Thirds who travelled to play Morpeth at Longhirst.
The journey was worthwhile and saw Gary Straughan’s team win their first game of the season in the Wellstream Northumberland and Tyneside Senior Cricket League ‘C’ Division.
Tynemouth batted first and amassed a huge Twenty20 score of 164-2.
Ben Richardson was bowled second ball for a duck and Mike Parker was lost for 11 after showing promise.
However, Chris Fairley scored 55 not out with six boundaries and Richie Straughan 71 not out with nine fours and two sixes.
The Tynemouth balanced opening attack of Max Robertson and Don Catley were fully effective in killing the game off in the first six overs.
Robertson’s pace conceded only a dozen runs and Catley’s guile delivered an opening maiden and then a catch by Robertson to seal 1-3.
Straughan was able to give more bowling experience to the upcoming Dan Storey and his other team members with Morpeth being held to 94-7.
Richardson, Lee Reed, the returning Neil Sturrock and ever youthful Mike McIntyre each turned their arm and took wickets, including a smart juggled caught and bowled by McIntyre.
On Saturday, Tynemouth first team travel to Chester-le-Street while the second XI will be at home against Chester-le-Street.
