North Shields Crusaders were in action in the first round of the county cup with a re-arranged tie at West End.
Crusaders were led by Pete Dyers at No 8 wile Owen Irving returned in the second row and Matt Carney was back at prop. The visitors started strongly and the first try was scored by winger Matthew Padden, who also converted. A try for centre Scott Rendles followed as the Crusaders opened up a 12-point lead. Kyle Wharton was next on the score sheet before Pete Dyers got his first with Padden adding the extras to make it 24-0 to Shields. West End were given a penalty try just before half-time to make it 24-7 at the break. In the second half and West End quickly scored a second try to further reduce their arrears, but it was the Crusaders who dominated the latter stages. Scrum-half Dominic Foster got a try which Padden converted before Pete Dyers got his second to make the final 36-12 to the visitors. Pete Dyers just edged hooker Sam Condie to the man of the match award. Crusaders face Medicals Serpents in the quarter-finals at home on Saturday, January 30. Next week they return to league action with a trip to Seghill Deputies, kick-off 2.15pm.
