North Shields RFC kick off their season this coming Saturday with a charity game against the 3rd Battalion The Rifles, with a 2pm kick-off.
The annual contest is played in memory of Jonathon (Jonny) Allott, who was born in North Shields and died while serving with the battalion in Afghanistan in March 2010.
Jonny’s father, Michael, is a North Shields RFC club stalwart and started organising these matches to raise money for the Care for Casualties Swift & Bold appeal (www.swiftandbold.org).
Jonny died of his injuries following an IED blast while acting as point man for his platoon.
Jonny was a keen sportsman and enjoyed watching his father play rugby whenever he could.
On Saturday, the clubhouse will be open from noon to 6pm and all club members, families and friends are welcome to attend.
As well as the game there will be a barbecue (just bring your own food), the bar will be open, there will be raffle prizes and a bouncy castle for the children.
