Old heads prove the winners in tribute match

THE annual ‘Chesties Challenge’ inter-club match at North Shields took place last weekend in honour of former young Shieldsman ‘Chestie’ who was tragically killed in a road accident some years ago.

Skipper for the Veterans was Chris Spedding whilst Dean Harrison took charge of the youngsters.

The match was even and by no means a friendly affair.

Notably the Veterans dominated the scrums and were able to utilise their far larger pack to dominate up-front, allowing them to take 19-7 point lead at the halfway stage.

Despite a valiant effort from the youngsters to get back into the match the Veterans stretched their lead in the last 20 minutes to seal victory.

Try scorers for the Veterans were Barry Elliot (2), Oliver Randall (2) and Nick Ward, whilst Mark Hall and Dale Jones registered for the under-30s.

The evening also saw the club presentations.

Ben Dalton stole the show claiming both Players’ Player of the Season and Young Player of the Year.

Rob Dixon picked up the Player of the Season award and Daniel Perrson received the Most Improved Player of the Year.

First XV player, committee member and fixture officer Chris Spedding was awarded Clubman of the Year.

Anyone interested in playing for North Shields is welcome to attend pre-season training.

The club website – www.northshieldsrfc.co.uk – will detail the pre-season schedule.
