Pupils ready to give tag rugby a try

SCHOOLS from around North Tyneside are gearing up for the Year 3 North East Schools Tag Rugby Festival.

It is being held at Benton Dene Primary School in Longbenton from 10am on Saturday with gates opening at 9.45am.

A total of 24 teams from the borough, Newcastle, South Tyneside and Northumberland are taking part in the third annual event, being sponsored by Northumberland Rugby Football Union.

Tag rugby is a fast moving, non-contact invasion game suitable for boys and girls to play together. It is safe, non-contact nature, combined with the fun and vibrancy of the sport.

The interchangeable nature of possession, leading to rapid switching from attack to defence, means that a range of skills is cultivated and developed.

The local schools taking part are Appletree Gardens Primary School, Whitley Bay; Benton Dene Primary School, Longbenton; Greenfields Primary School, Wideopen; Ivy Road Primary School, Forest Hall; Langley First School, Whitley Bay; New York Primary School, New York; St Bartholomew’s Primary School, Longbenton; St Mary’s RC Primary School, Cullercoats; Shiremoor Primary School, Shiremoor; and Southridge First School, Whitley Bay.
