Pupils shoot their way to basketball title

WELLFIELD Middle School have been crowned the new North Tyneside Hoops for Health champions after the Whitley Bay school took part in a basketball tournament at Sport Central, the home of the Newcastle Eagles.

As semi-finalists in the tournament, the Year 6 pupils played against Valley Gardens Middle School before the evening fixture between the Eagles and the Sheffield Sharks, winning the match 8-2 with baskets from Ben Fegan, Leyton Harding and Georgina Gyde.

Wellfield then went through to the final with Percy Main Primary which was played during half-time in front of a sell-out crown of Eagles supporters.

The final match was nail-biting, with Wellfield going down by a basket in the opening minutes.

However, the Wellfield team were confident and clawed back to win the game with baskets from Ben Fegan and Amy Bell.

As champions of prestigious competition, the Wellfield team received a trophy and certificate.

“We are very proud of our selves and hope to continue our winning streak,” said Amy Bell and Leyton Harding, two of the winning team members.

They plan to continue training in the hopes of adding new trophies to their collection.

The team was made up of Amy Bell, Ryan Cooke, Jake Eaton, Ben Fegan, Georgina Gyde, Leyton Harding, Nathan Howell and Cameron Wright.
