ROCKCLIFF Vikings managed to field a full strength side for the first time since Christmas in the return league fixture against Gateshead.
The Vikings were determined to reverse the result from the first game of the season where Gateshead snatched a win in the dying minutes of the match, and the large crowd were treated to a great competitive game of running rugby.
Gateshead started well and had the majority of the possession in the opening ten minutes but the Vikings defence held firm and eventually turned the ball over. Quick ball down the backs put Nick Dalton into space, Dalton ran 40 yards before unselfishly offloading to Andrew Telford who finished off the move wide of the posts. Richard Berne added the extra two points for a 7-0 lead.
Gateshead responded with a penalty kick in front of the posts for 7-3 but had no answer to the Rockcliff attack when they ran with the ball in hand and further tries came from Nick Dalton, Ricki Hasnip, Jonny Birkett, Simon Cormack, Chris Keen and a second try from Telford as well a further four points from conversions; one each from Berne and Rhys Johnstone.
Chris Keane was man of the match with an excellent display in the back row.
