Rockliff still second after win over Ashington

Rockcliff maintained second spot in Durham and Northumberland Division 2 with a bonus point win at Ashington.

The home side started strongly and opened a 6-0 lead with two penalties, but Rockcliff responded with a try when Bran Stewart jinked through from stand-off to score under the posts. The conversion was added by Andrew Webster to put them 7-6 in front.

Steven Scott then scored a trademark try, flying down the wing to go over in the corner, again converted by Webster for 14-6.

Ashington fought back and from a scrum on Rockcliff’s line they forced a penalty try, which was converted to leave them trialing by a point at the break.

In the second half Rockcliff stepped up the gears and Chris Keane broke from the back of a lineout to sprint through from ten metres out to score, and again Webster added the conversion.

Webster then scored a try himself, breaking from halfway and beating the full-back to score, unconverted, for 26-13.

Webster then added a penalty to his tally to extend the lead before Stewart scored his second try of the game, a carbon copy of his first half score, sniping through from close range to score under the posts.

Webster added the extras to complete a 16-point personal haul and to see Rockcliff close the game out at 36-13.

Next week Rockcliff are at home to league leaders Ryton.
