THE opening game of 2011 saw North Shields RFC take on Chester-le-Street at home, where they ran out winners by a score of 84-0.
Having defeated Chester twice this season Shields were confident of victory despite the extended break due to the recent adverse weather and Christmas break.
From start to finish Shields dominated this fixture predominantly thanks to the speed of the backline and some excellent kicking from stand-off Jordan Carr.
By half time Shields had already surpassed the four tries necessary to claim the bonus point.
Despite several changes, the home side maintained their strong start in the second half and ran out clear winners.
Shields scored a total of 14 tries. Dale Jones and Dean Harrison both scored three tries apiece. Full back Jones was particularly impressive, breaking the gain line with pace and power on a frequent basis to claim the man of the match award.
At the halfway stage of the season Shields remain unbeaten and are seven points clear of second placed Whitby.
Next week Shields face Hartlepool Athletic at home.
