North Shields RFC 35-3 Sunderland

North Shields came into this game on the back of a commanding performance against Sedgefield the week before.

Shields had to defend for the opening 5-10 minutes, as Sunderland attacked from the off. Shields’ defence is much improved from last season and Sunderland opted to kick an easy penalty to take a 0-3 lead.

Shields soon took the lead when lock Mark Hall charged down a kick, caught a fortunate bounce and ran the remaining length of the field to score under the sticks.

The scores remained 7-3 at half time.

Shields turned the screw in the second half, with big performances from Hall, prop Chris Spedding, and centre Dean Harrison. Hall added another 3 tries to take his tally for the day to 4 while Harrison scored another. All 5 conversions were successfully kicked by fly half Jack Rendles, who was nominated as man of the match by Sunderland.

Shields now sit fourth in the early season table and have only conceded 8 points in their opening 2 fixtures. Coach Tommy Rendles is running well attended training sessions on Tuesday and Friday nights from 7pm and any new or returning players are more than welcome to attend.
