FIGURE skater David Richardson is celebrating after taking the silver medal in the Lombardia Trophy.

The 25-year-old, who first started skating at Whitley Bay Ice Rink, claimed second place on the podium in his first international event of the new season.

Now based in Nottingham, he contracted tonsillitis a few days before flying out to Italy.

Richardson said: “It’s a great feeling to know that when I feel ill I still have enough to put in a strong, solid performance.”

Richardson’s short programme, performed to Historia de Amor, earned him a credible 51.35 points, landing him in second place behind Italian Giacomelli but missed out on five points after judges mistook his triple lutz for a triple flip.

He struggled slightly in his long programme to Beethoven’s Fifth Secret but earned 86.38 points to take silver with a total of 137.73 points.
