TWO Whitley Bay ice skaters are bidding for glory at a national event.
Whitley Bay Ice Skating Club’s Rachael Casey is taking part in the Singles Gold Class 1 category, while Gemma Wilkinson will be competing in three young adult categories – Singles Silver, Solo PD Bronze and Solo FD Silver – at the 2011 British Adult Championships.
The three-day National Ice Skating Association (NISA) event is at Sheffield until Saturday.
More than 130 skaters from across the UK will compete in categories including singles, pairs, solo, couples, exhibition and artistic at the state-of-the-art iceSheffield venue.
Keith Horton, chief executive of NISA, the national governing body responsible for the development of the sport throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland, said: “NISA is extremely pleased to host the 2011 British Adult Championships in Sheffield.
“The championships is now an important date within the British skating calendar.
“We are pleased to be able to offer our skaters an opportunity to skate in one of the very best ice skating venues in the UK.”
In recent years, adult skating has been formally recognised by the International Skating Union, which now organises an annual World Adult Skating Championships.
Keith added: “We would like to wish all our competitors the very best for the Championships and, whilst the competition for the podium places will be fierce, we trust that all involved will have an enjoyable time.”
