A KARATE instructor is celebrating picking up a national title.

East Coast Kickboxing & Karate Academy instructor Steph Young took the title of IAKSA/ASKO Ladies’ Open Weight Sport Karate to become national champion.

Prior to the fight, Young had fought her opponent Kirsty Murden many times before and knew she was going to face a close fight, that proved to be the case.

The first round went into extra time after it was scored a draw, but Murden just took the round by a single point.

Young then took the second by storm, clearly winning that round by a long shot, then doing exactly the same in the third.

Young said: “I have fought Kirsty many times in the past and we have always had very close fights, but I trained so hard for this title and was not going to walk away without it.”

East Coast Kickboxing, based in Norham Road, North Shields, have won titles in the past.

In June 2010, Louis Gallagher won IAKSA/ASKO National School Boy Title.

East Coast Kickboxing will be travelling down to the IAKSA/ASKO National Championships on March 25 in Nottingham very positive that they will come back with another bus full of trophies.

Young will be taking part before she fights three rounds in the ring in April at Jason Dorn’s fight night show in Ilkeston.
