Sunbathers give touch rugby a try

NORTH east rugby league staff descended on Tynemouth Longsands to introduce touch rugby to beachgoers.

Adam Houston, league for all officer, joined community rugby league coaches Lee Carbutt and Ryan Clarke to teach sunbathers about the game and give them a chance to have a try.

A couple of familiar faces from Wallsend Eagles were joined by people trying the game for the first time.

Adam said: “It was great to see so many people playing when the beach was as packed as it was.

“I wasn’t sure how popular it would be but once people saw how much fun it was, we had people waiting to play so had to rotate teams on and off.

“The only thing that stopped us playing longer was the tide coming in.

“It will definitely be something we look to do again.”

Touch rugby is a fast moving minimal contact evasive game that is played throughout the world by men and women of all ages and skill levels.

This fast, simple and exciting game promotes the fundamental skills of running, handling, evasion and support play, whilst developing basis principles of attack and defence, without the fear of getting hurt.

Touch rugby is suitable for both beginners and experienced players. You can play in either men’s, women’s or mixed games.
