CULLERCOATS Tennis Club ran its annual winter floodlit tournament last Sunday to coincide with British summer time and the new season starting.
The mixed tournament saw Jordan Simpson and Theresa Marrinan, and Rob Doig and Helen Thompson progressing through to the semi-finals from the first group.
George Charlton and Helen Cass stormed their way through to the last four without losing a match and were joined from the second round robin group by Richard Moffatt and Diane Brown.
In the semis Simpson and Marrinan were too consistent for Charlton and Cass and were joined in the final by Thompson and Doig who beat Moffatt and Brown.
The final was also a close match with Thompson and Doig winning a tight set to take the 125-year-old trophy from club president David Bottrill.
The floodlit tournament marked the end of the winter and start of summer one, which sees offers on for junior and senior membership.
It kicks off on Saturday at the club next to St George’s Church, Cullercoats, when junior coaching begins with head coach Stuart Cass from 9am to 3pm.
Adult coaching starts on Sunday, April 3, from 6pm to 7.30pm for intermediates/improvers and from 7.30pm to 9pm for more advanced club team players.
This year, the club is running an additional ‘absolute beginners’ group for players who have either never played and want to start, or have not played for many years.
This will run from 5pm to 6pm on Sundays with the first couple of sessions being ‘free try-out’ sessions.
Anyone interested should contact Stuart on 07787 543072 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
The club held its annual general meeting last week and reported on a successful year in which six senior teams were promoted.
