CULLERCOATS Tennis Club men’s first team players Dan Simpson and Rory Thompson won the LTA Ponteland Open 18 and under and 16 and under titles respectively last weekend.
Simpson won all of his four matches in straight sets to claim the 18s title whilst Thompson also came through the 16s draw without dropping a set.
Both players have played a part in Cullercoats first team’s two victories in the Northumberland and Durham League A division so far this season.
Thompson also teamed up with Martin Slater to win the Ponteland Open 18s doubles event, beating club mates Simpson and James Parkin in three sets.
All three were joined by Jacob Docx in the Cullercoats boys’ 16s first team which enjoyed a 6-0 victory over Beverly last weekend.
Cullercoats boys are aiming to win the 16s top division for a record sixth consecutive year.
All four players won their singles and both doubles to sit top of the A league.
Cullercoats boys’ 16s third team were not so fortunate in their tie against Gosforth Garden Village last weekend, with Ryan Maughan the only player able to win a rubber in his 4-0, 4-1 victory over Gosforth’s number one.
Olly Perkins was unlucky to lose in two close tie-breaks in his singles and was unable to win the doubles rubber with partner Alistair Brophy.
The usual tie-break kings Ryan Maughan and Tom Whiting-Adams must have lost their touch as they were on the wrong end of an epic doubles encounter eventually losing the third set tie-break 18-16.
