Trying times see Rockcliff fall short

ROCKCLIFF and Long Buckley served up a try fest in the sun, with the hosts setting up a first-half lead only for the Northamptonshire tourists to run in six unanswered tries in the second half.

Stu Thompson, available for action once again, was a powerhouse in the second row, while Steven Scott crossed twice for the Red and Golds, and Jonny Birkett scored a hat-trick, with Karl Briggs adding a conversion for Rockcliff.

FOR the second time in the space of a couple of weeks, the Vikings were edged out by Ryton.

Missing Stu Thompson in the second row, the Vikings took the game to the home side, and following a good spell of pressure, No. 8 Jonny Birkett powered over to touch down, converted by stand-off Terry Macauley, playing his first game for Rockcliff for two years.

Scrum half Sam Heppell combined with Birkett to release Nick Dalton on the wing, and he ran the ball in from 22 metres out.

Prop Dan Atkinson touched down from close range, with Macauley converting.
