Tynemouth CC’s Under 15s are just two steps away from the ECB National Finals after a convincing win over Yorkshire champions Saltburn.
The Northumberland champions batted first and got off to a blistering start thanks to openers Ben McGee and Finn Lonnberg who hit 62 off eight overs.
McGee fell lbw for 17 but Lonnberg had to retire on 50 due to competition rules.
Brothers Sean and Matty Longstaff kept the scoreboard ticking over. Sean went for 17 but with support late innings from Owen Bailey (11), Tom Collins (8), Calum Brown and James Straughan, Matty Longstaff finished 22 not out as the visitors finished on 136-5.
In reply, the Saltburn openers survived a hostile spell from Lonnberg and Longstaff. It was however the guile off spinner Calum Brown that swung the game conclusively Tynemouth’s way. He removed both openers Aynsley and Jones and then bowled Erskine to reduce Saltburn to 69-3.
With tight spells from Dan McGee 2-13 and wickets for Longstaff (1-14), Lewis Beaumont (2-5) and Lonnberg 1-14, Saltburn were all out for 105 in the last over to give Tynemouth a convincing 31 run win.
They now entertain the Lancashire championship winners at home on July 21.
