Whitley Bay Barbarians lifted the North East Rugby League Division 2 trophy after a 68-16 win against Wallsend Eagles A at Kingston Park.

The teams had already met twice in the season with Whitley edging victory both times in tough encounters.

The Babas had the luxury of nearly a full squad available giving coach Seamus McCallion some hard decision to make in the his 20-man selection.

From the off Whitley were looking to assert themselves on the game the and opening breakthrough came in the first minute with Mark Hall crashing over from close range, with Gavin Duffy adding the extras to make it 6-0.

Adam Eglin went over next with a clever play from dummy half, with Duffy adding the two points to make it 12-0. John Lee broke from his own half to score under the posts to make it 16-0, with Duffy then taking the score to 18-0.

Dave Anderson grounded the ball after managing to wriggle the arms free in a group tackle to make it 22-0 with Duffy again adding the extras.

Whitley added three more tries in the first half with Ben Robertson and Aidan McCallion touching down an unconverted try each before captain Jonny Dubois scored under the posts, with Duffy kicking the conversion to give a half-time score of Whitley Bay 38 Wallsend A 0.

The Blue and Whites picked up where they left off after the break with Dubois going over for his second try with Duffy taking the score to 44-0.

Hall went over next for his second of the game with Duffy again kicking the extras, taking it to the half century mark.

Eagles A got themselves on the scoreboard with an unconverted to make it 50-4.

Dubois completed his hat-trick soon after, breaking through to score under the posts, with Duffy taking the score to 56-4.

Wallsend A pulled back another try with the conversion taking the score to 56-10.

Tries from Ben Dalton and Ben Marshall, with Duffy kicking both to complete the scoring for the Babas taking it to 68-10.

Eagles A added one more converted try to take the final score 68-16.

Man of the match was awarded to Whitley Bay captain Dubois.
