This Saturday sees the annual open training ‘taster’ session and signing on event at the Whitley Bay Barbarians Rugby League Club.
Held at Whitley Bay High School between 10am and noon, the event is for those who have not had the opportunity to try rugby league before and is held under the watchful eye of the club’s own qualified coaches but also with the added support of two professional stars from Gateshead Thunder.
The event is to allow newcomers to try out the sport with some of the club’s more experienced players but is also the day for current players and beginners alike to sign for the coming season.
The cost of signing on is £15 per person and as well as becoming a member of the club they will also receive a Whitley Bay Barbarians back pack.
The club caters for both boys and girls in a number of age categories, under-9s, under-11s, under-12s, under-14s and under-16s, as well as the open team for adults.
Games are usually played on Saturdays throughout the spring and summer with further training sessions during the week.
This year is the 20th anniversary of the club and to celebrate there are a number of special events planned.
As part of the celebrations the club has announced Cancer Research as the club charity and have commissioned a special 20th anniversary rugby top with all proceeds going towards the charity fund.
They also have a number of events planned to support this including a charity match between present players and past stars.
Anyone interested in gaining a greater insight into the sport, make new friends and get fit doing so, go to Whitley Bay High School on Saturday.
