Tynemouth CC’s quickie Finn Lonnberg has bowled his way into the big time with selection into the ECB North of England squad.
The 15-year-old and team-mate Ben McGee were part of a 17-man North of England trial squad.
Although McGee fell heavily whilst fielding, Lonnberg blew the opposition away to secure a place at the prestigious Bunberry Festival later this month.
It will give the Whitley Bay High School pupil, who has already represented Northumberland and Durham Junior Academy as well as Tynemouth’s First team, a chance to impress the ECB hierarchy.
Tynemouth chairman Russell Perry said: “Finn has worked really hard over the winter improving his fitness, a key element of a fast bowler armoury and it has brought him this reward.
“He follows a long line of Tynemouth youngsters who have gone to the Bunberry Festival which includes Barry Stewart, Gordon Muchall, Nicky Peng, Paul Muchall, Liam Mordey and Richard Coughtrie.
“Several of these players have gone on to turn professional in the first class game and I’m sure Finn realises that he needs to continue to work on all aspects of his game to make a future for himself in the sport.
“He has impressed all who have watched him and I look forward to watching his progress over the next few years.”
Perry added “Ben has impressed greatly with the bat and has already announced himself on the senior scene with performances in the ECB North East Premier League. Injury is part and parcel of a sporting life and I’m sure he has the strength of character to bounce back and show everyone his class.”
